You Don't Have To Be A Ninja To Protect Yourself!
While being in good physical shape is always an advantage, not everyone is. Unfortunately, when seeking a victim, an attacker often does take note of the physical shape and potential strength that a victim may have, and usually chooses those that are not in good physical shape.
The good news for you, if you are one of those "out of shape" people, is that when it comes to self-defense, your physical conditioning really doesn't matter quite so much. Even if you are terribly out of shape or even disabled, you can defend yourself, as long as you know how.
You've probably heard news stories about little old ladies warding off attackers. These stories are true. If a little old lady can defend herself, so can you. Again, it is just a matter of knowing how, and you don't have to be a ninja to do it.
Some people mistakenly believe that you must study martial arts to defend yourself. While martial arts will indeed teach you how to defend yourself, and self-defense classes do include many different moves that are used in martial arts, you do not need a martial arts class. You need a self defense class and there is a vast difference.
It takes years to master any type of martial arts. It takes a few hours to learn some basic self defense. To master martial arts, you must be in good physical condition. (And your physical condition will vastly improves through the act of learning martial arts.) For self-defense, you do not have to be in good physical shape, and you may not even get in good physical shape learning self defense. Again, it simply doesn't matter.
The point is, never assume that you cannot learn self defense. If you are in a wheelchair, you can learn self defense techniques. If you are overweight, you can learn self defense. If you walk with a cane or walker, you can learn self defense. If you have a bad back, you can still learn self defense. Make it a point to call and talk to someone who teaches self defense in your area. Let them know what kind of shape you are in, physically, and you will be vastly surprised at what you learn!
